Focus of Work
The Hawaiʻi Wastewater Coalition brings together nonprofit organizations, community leaders, funders, researchers, engineers, state and county agencies, and other partners working to improve wastewater management and accelerate cesspool conversion across Hawaiʻi. While many organizations are actively advancing pieces of this work, an emerging Coalition in recent years recognized the need for stronger statewide coordination, clearer shared priorities, and more effective collaboration among the many groups working to protect water quality, coral reefs, and community health.
Our Approach
Seatone was engaged to strengthen the Coalition’s organizational foundation, facilitate collaborative planning, and support its evolution from an information-sharing network toward a more coordinated, action-oriented forum. Since early 2026, Seatone has facilitated monthly Coalition meetings, conducted a situational assessment involving organizations, agencies, community leaders, funders, and longtime practitioners, and helped participants clarify the Coalition’s purpose, identify priority areas of shared work, and build greater alignment across sectors. This collaborative process combines monthly facilitated meetings with quarterly in-person planning sessions to map out and advance the Coalition’s future direction.
Key Outcomes
In recent months, the Coalition has made significant progress toward establishing a clearer identity, shared direction, and stronger foundation for long-term collaboration and action. Participants affirmed the Coalition’s unique role as a statewide coordination and knowledge-sharing network, identified the communities and partners it seeks to serve, clarified its opportunity space and niche within Hawaii’s broader wastewater landscape, and established priority areas for future work. These include strategic communications, community engagement, financing, policy coordination, improved alignment among organizations, and ongoing support for community-based wastewater and cesspool conversion projects across the state.
